Skegness Natureland Seal Sanctuary – Seal Pup Rescues

Natureland

Natureland is a favourite venue for organised party visits for schools, Brownies, Scouts etc. Every effort is made to mix entertainment with education by opening the minds of our young visitors to new ideas on nature by the information given at feeding times, plus a comprehensive labelling programme throughout the whole attraction.

The end of June is usually the time when the first of the years orphaned and abandoned seal pups start to appear on the Lincolnshire beaches. These have been separated from their mothers, usually by bad weather or strong tides. With luck somebody will report them to Natureland and we will bring the pups back to our Seal Hospital for treatment. The first few days are critical but the seals will hopefully soon start to respond to their medication. After a couple of weeks they should be feeding well and will be ready to have their first swim in the small hospital pool. After this its over to the main rearing pool where its all about gaining weight before being released back to the wild. The rescued pups can be seen at all stages of their rehabilitation in the Seal Hospital and the outside pools.

Natureland has released more than 560 seals back into The Wash and rescues between 30 and 40 seals every year – harbour seals in the summer and then grey seals during the winter.
