What’s happening at The Judge’s Lodging

Judges Lodges

Why did Victorian ladies’ knickers have a hole in the middle? Why did the judge’s maid walk up and down the stairs 24 times?  What did posh gentlemen do if they wanted a wee during a long meal?  How did cooks squeeze all the juice out of cow’s tongues?  Why does going to school sometimes feel like being in prison?

These and other questions are answered in our  new children’s Guidebook entitled ‘Interesting Stuff, Gross Facts & a Bit About The Building’, a venture by staff to encourage Children in families and groups to enjoy their visit.  It is full of facts that will fascinate and hilarious drawings, and is a great way for teachers to discover a bit more about some of the things we will tell the kids as they work with us.  Copies are available for just £1.50 (incl. p&p).

We also have some new free teachers’ packs on our website:

And of course,  our popular 'Life Below Stairs’ days run throughout the year, where you will work with the Victorian servants to prepare the house for the Judge’s arrival. Totally hands-on, fun informative days where kids of any age and ability will enjoy the hard work, sense of achievement and fun, as we intersperse their labour with magic lantern shows,  dressing up, masks and the occasional round of hunt the thimble (not nearly as easy as you may think—we have become expert at placing it in full view but hard to spot!)  We never book more than one school in a day so you will have our full attention
